2005-2008
The Closeness of Mars begins with transmission and connection. As Mars veered ever closer to earth in its orbit, the transmissions of war became more insistent and yet they were transient images of a technology that was often idiosyncratic. These images that beamed non-stop for weeks were often incoherent, displayed in a syncopated manner and contained odd bits of information with unfathomable content. I did not photograph “the news.” It is these slices of transmission that were photographed and in combination with other photographs, comprise the series. (from a statement about the work, 2005.)
